Twelve years ago, I was a frustrated and depressed office worker, struggling to find PURPOSE in my work. As I coldly contemplated various ways of removing myself from the planet, the power of my intention frightened me. Suddenly awake, I called a friend (knowing that I didn’t have the guts to actually pull it off). Telling her of my plan to leave and expecting her sympathy, she said, “Baeth, that’s the most selfish thing I’ve ever heard you say! You need to snap out of it. Don’t you realize how loved you are? That makes me sad.”

Getting defensive, I said, “Okay, then… what should I do?”

“How about asking?” she said.

“Asking whom?” I said.

“Uh, the Universe,” she said.

I decided I would heed her advice and pray. It was something I hadn't done since my days in Catholic school. I kneeled down by my bed, hands folded, head bent in solemn repose, and said this prayer, "God, Great Spirit, Universe, if you show me my Life Purpose, I will forever be your humble servant." At the time, I didn't realize the power of this prayer.

Meantime, another friend kept calling me and bugging me to get my hands read. “Baeth, I know you’ve been feeling down. This will help. I promise. It’s AMAZING!” she said.

“No, I’m not getting a hand reading. Come on!” I snorted. Being a practical, science-minded gal – albeit with a metaphysical bent – I wasn’t signing up for a palm reading.
